Research Internship (Summer 2025 - 12 Weeks)

About Us

Smule Inc. is a leading US-based company specializing in innovative mobile software solutions. Our mission? To bring the world together through music. At Smule, we transform how people sing together, reimagining how they connect. Join us to build cutting-edge technology that fuels a global community of creators.

About the Role

We are seeking two highly motivated and talented research interns to join our team for a 12-week summer internship focused on innovative advancements in speech and singing voice processing. You'll be immersed in a fast-paced, collaborative research environment, working directly with experienced researchers. You will focus on one of the following exciting projects:

  • On-Device Speech Restoration: Develop and implement novel techniques to restore degraded speech signals, with a focus on real-time performance and low-resource environments. This includes exploring strategies to better model audio sequences, distill generative models, and leverage prior information about human vocalizations.

  • Efficient Singing Voice Conversion: Explore and create efficient models for transforming singing voices, aiming for high-quality output with minimal computational cost. This involves exploring strategies to distill large semantic, pitch, embedding, and vocoding models into smaller versions, and combining stages when possible.

We anticipate that strong results from the internship could be published at top-tier conferences.

Who You Are

  • Currently pursuing a B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Audio and Music Engineering, Music Technology, Speech Processing, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.

  • Experienced with audio data and proficient in using PyTorch. Familiarity with acceleration frameworks like PyTorch Lightning is a strong plus.

  • Familiar with state-of-the-art research, demonstrated by either of the following:

    • First-author publications in leading audio/music conferences (e.g., ICML, ICLR, NeurIPS, INTERSPEECH, ICASSP, ISMIR).

    • Significant contributions to the open-source community in areas such as speech enhancement, speech restoration, voice conversion, speaker verification, knowledge distillation, or on-device/efficient model architectures.

What We Offer

  • The chance to work on challenging, real-world problems with the potential for significant impact across the Smule user base.

  • A collaborative and supportive research environment.

  • Opportunities for career growth and learning in a high-energy environment.

  • A fun, creative, and collaborative culture that encourages innovation.

How to Apply

If you're passionate about pushing the boundaries of speech and singing voice processing and want to contribute to a platform that brings people together through music, we'd love to hear from you. Please submit your resume, a cover letter detailing your relevant experience, and any pertinent publications or project links.

Join us at Smule and be part of a team that's redefining musical expression and connection in the digital age.
